Waiting on Wednesday #14

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, showcasing books that we are waiting to read.

Title: Finale (Hush Hush #4)
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Pages: 448
Release Date: 23rd October 2012

Goodreads - Amazon.co.uk/.com - Book Depository

Fates unfurl in the gripping conclusion to the "New York Times" bestselling Hush, Hush saga. Nora is more certain than ever that she is in love with Patch. Fallen Angel or no, he is the one for her. Her heritage and destiny may mean that they will always be enemies, but there is no turning her back on him. And yet their biggest challenge lies ahead. Can their love survive a seemingly insurmountable divide? The lines are drawn, but it's unclear which sides have been taken. And in the end, will there be enough trust left to rebuild what has been broken?
While this series hasn't ever blown me away, it has stayed consistent up until now. I am looking forward to seeing how this series is going to end.

Teaser Tuesday #15

It is Tuesday! Which means it is time for another teaser. This weeks teaser is from Losing Lila by Sarah Alderson.

Losing Lila (Lila #2) by Sarah Alderson

'"Stay here," he said, pushing past me and reaching for the door handle. I heard it then too - a screech of tyres, the slamming of car doors.' - page. 2
Oh yeah! Action and tension on page two! I am not that far in and I am loving it so far. If you have not read Hunting Lila you have to go and pick it up. It is amazing! And if you have read it, you have to read the sequel as well.

Reading Plan #13

On the Blog Last Week
I may have managed to get some posts up but I wasn't very chatty last week. I didn't do a lot of blogging and reading other peoples blogs. I blame it all on the Olympics. I have time to write and publish my posts and then I head straight back to watching the games again. When it is over and back to the normal rubbish, I will hopefully be back in the swing of things. The Olympics is also why I am reading really slowly. I manged one book in a week. Hmmm...

What I Have Just Finished
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass #1) by Sarah J. Maas

While this may have taken me a week to read, I still enjoyed it. My review can be found here.

Currently Reading

Losing Lila (Lila #2) by Sarah Alderson

I have just started this book. Three chapters in and I am already hooked. I cannot wait to see how this one pans out.

I did receive this book this week and therefore could have done a Stacking the Shelves post but I was a little busy. My family has come down for the Olympics and I didn't have time Friday night. I should do one next week.

To Read Next

Once Burned (Night Prince #1) by Jeaniene Frost

Again, like I said last week, I love the Night Huntress series and I am looking forward to Vlad's tale. My friend has already read it and she couldn't stop laughing.

Book Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Title: Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass #1)
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Publisher: Bloomsbury UK
Pages: 404
Release Date: 2nd August 2012
Read in: August 2012

*This is a review of an ARC. Thank you to Bloomsbury UK and netgalley for the copy*
Meet Celaena Sardothien. Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.
In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.
Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted
Sometimes a true test of how much I love a book is if I drop everything to read it. After seeing all the five star reviews I was expecting to be blown away but other things came first. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to continue the series.

‘”I demand to know,” she began, but the Captain of the Guard pulled her back from the prince with spine-snapping force. “I wasn’t going to kill him, you buffoon.”
“Watch your mouth before I throw you back into the mines,” the brown eyed captain said.
“Oh I don’t think you’d do that,”
“And why is that?” Chaol replied.

“Because there’s something you want from me, something you want badly enough to come here yourselves. “

Warning, this is not a good book to read while tucked up in bed, in the dark with a reading light. Things go bump in the night and menace creeps up behind you in the shadows. There is plenty of that in this book. It is a lot weirder than I originally thought it was going to be, and creepier. I loved the magic woven into this book and I cannot wait to discover more in the next books.

Most of the action and mystery started to occur around half way. Before she was getting to know people and preparing for the tests. I thought this book was going to be all about getting through the tournament but there was also another layer. I love it when a book surprises me. In some of the scenes the suspense was almost torture.

However, one of the main things mentioned in the synopsis is Celaena taking part in a tournament to become the King’s Champion. Unfortunately that felt a bit like a side line compared to the other mysterious things that were going on; the deeper layer. I think it should have become more prominent. Most of the tests were only briefly described and they felt like filler between unusual events. Celaena’s main focus seemed to be on the tests, why not ours?

The ending, however … wow. That’s all I can say. This was the first time I was grabbed by the throat and wasn’t let go until the end. Action, suspense and feelings wrapped up into a brilliant final few chapters.

A number of times when a book is written in third person, it is a struggle to understand the characters. However here I picked up the individual personalities very quickly. Actions can show the thoughts we would get in a first person dialogue.

Celaena was kick ass. She reminds me of Katniss from The Hunger Games. I love her. She knew what she wanted and went for it. But even though she is an assassin she still had her morals and a caring side. She was still human. She is one tough cookie to come out a strong person after everything that has happened.

The tension between Celaena and Dorian was entertaining. It is definitely not a sappy romance. It was obvious they were physically attracted to each other, it was the tension emotionally that they needed to overcome.

I have huge respect for Chao. I get the feeling he is not perfectly content with his position and I was willing for more to happen for him. I will be keeping a closer eye on him.

If the tests were more prominent and the action picked up earlier this book would have been amazing. But, overall, I did enjoy it and I am looking forward to seeing how this series continues.

Feature and Follow #10

Weekly Meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.
This is a weekly meme where we answer questions and blog hop to find new blogs to follow. You follow me I will follow you back

Q: Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?
That is a hard one. I don't think they do. It would make logical sense but I can't remember a time where my mood remained unchanged for a long period of time; enough for me to read a new book. No matter my emotional mood, I usually read what I was reading any way. If I am not in the mood for reading that is a different matter. Or I may not be in the mood for the particular book; happy or sad. My current mood may, however, affect what book I decide to read next. That is just by chance what I am feeling at that specific moment in time.

The only time I can think of where my reading habits do change is when I am stressed, especially around exam season. I have very little free time therefore I devote it all to reading instead of other pastimes. I get through quite a lot of books during those periods.

Book Review: Deadly Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

Title: Deadly Hemlock (Hemlock #1)
Author: Kathleen Peacock
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Pages: 404
Release Date: 5th July 2012
Read In: July 2012

Goodreads - Amazon.co.uk/.com - Book Depository

Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.
Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer: A white werewolf.
Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.
Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.
Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.
What made this novel so entertaining? Well it had mystery and suspense. My favourite books are always the ones that do not tell me everything at the beginning and therefore keep me guessing. The downside to the mystery, it is very hard to talk about anything in a non-spoiler review.

‘It was our fault Amy was dead. All of our faults. The best friend who had bailed; the boyfriend who had been running late; the guy who hadn’t answered his phone. Six days ago, a werewolf had killed Amy and we were each to blame. ‘

There were so many unanswered questions. I felt sorry for Mac most of the time. There was so much being kept from her, and I wanted to know it all. Who is Amy’s murderer? It was not as simple as originally seen. It was a case of everyone seems to know something that the main character doesn’t. I’m surprised Mac doesn’t come out of this not trusting anybody. It was played just right. Feed me snippets of information to keep me interested but not too much so that I lose interest.

This is a very unique take on werewolves. But I can’t say what it is. We are not told all about it all at once. I would not want to spoil you in a review. The Lupine Syndrome is what drew me in. What exactly does it entail? What made it more interesting was the fact that none of the main characters seemed to be aware what it entails either. All the facts seem a little hazy; is being a werewolf a bad thing?

Jason was a mystery throughout the entirety of the book. Things were happening to him but you were never sure what really was going on behind the scenes. He also made so many mistakes. I wouldn’t be too surprised if most people think he is a bit of a prick, and to be honest he was. But I didn’t hate him. In fact I felt sorry for him. He gets my sympathy vote.

Oh Kyle how I love you. It didn’t take me long to fall for him. He is so selfless; selfless and sweet. I love friends turned lovers. Mac and Kyle are great together. Throughout the course of the book Kyle needed Mac to be there for him. Kyle needed Mac’s understanding. Normally it is the other way round.

Branson Derby is one of those antagonists who are not open about their attentions; the sinister kind that creeps around in the shadows manipulating events and people. He is scary. As are his Tracker’s. They generated the right sense of nervousness in you that you don’t trust them but not enough to question why they are there. I thought it was very well done.

There is a magic salad bowl in the first chapter. Watch out for it.

It is quite hard to talk about the parts you love without giving anything away; especially in a book like this. So go and find out for yourself. Deadly Hemlock has mystery, intrigue, twists, good romance, and unique paranormal elements. What more could you want?

Monthly Wrap Up (July 2012)

At the end of each month I write a post containing all the books that I have read in that month. The Gem of the Month is the best book that I read. If, for whatever reason, I read a book but did not post a review, you can find them posted here along with my rating.

I got through 9 books this month. Two of them received two stars so it wasn't the best of reading months for me. Hopefully I can have some more enjoyable books in August. Some of these books I plan to review but they haven't been posted yet. This post will be updated when they do.
