The Mortal Instruments Movie: Costumes #1

*Warning* This post includes On-Set photographs. If you want the movie to be a total surprise when you watch it, best not read on.

This is the second entry in a series of posts that I am going to be doing. They are  sharing my thoughts on the different aspects of the The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie. My first post is my initial thoughts on different members of the cast. It can be found here.
Over the past three days, the The Mortal Instruments fandom has been treated to some amazing on-set photographs and reports, curtsy of the fans that were really lucky to be there (so jealous). Oh, and paparazzi got some amazing shots too. I have been stalking Twitter for the past three days. I am surprised I am not fangirled out. I thought it would be ages before we got any photos. I thought they would be cooped up inside a studio. Nope, location work seems to be first. Yay!

While pictures doen’t tell us much about what the film is going to be like as a whole, there is one crucial thing we can glean from them. Costumes! And, boy, were we in for a treat.

Shadowhunter Gear.

Kevin Zegers as Alec!
Look at the runes!
Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace!
He looks amazing!

Jemima West as Isabelle!
Look closely and you can
see her whip
When I first saw the images I did not expect we would see the Shadowhunter gear. With ‘walking down a street’ scenes, I expected pictures of Jace in more traditional jeans and a grey shirt. Instead we got the get-up I wanted to see the second most (Magnus in costume is what I want to see the most). And not only was it Jace but Alec and Isabelle as well.
I love them. The outfits are almost identical to what I imagined in my head. It is like the characters have been picked out of my head, placed in the real world with new faces and heights. It was surreal. I also love the boots. They are the kick ass shoes that I want. The costumes say, in the words of Simon, “I am a badass.” I loved seeing the runes as well. Kevin, with his sleeveless ensemble, showed them off nicely. Jamie also had a picture showing off the ones on his chest. I couldn’t stop smiling, and staring. These pictures show that it is these books that are being adapted and that we haven’t got it all wrong.
Jemima West (Isabelle), Kevin Zegers (Alec),
Lily Collins (Clary) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace).

Lily Collins (Clary)
Clary’s Outfits

This was the first costume I saw of Clary in a costume (above). I don’t know what they were filming so my reaction was, “What? Clary has style in the movie.” Then I discovered what the scene was; the moment where Izzy has, figuratively, thrown up on her. Oh yeah, I can see Isabelle wearing clothes like that. Then I saw other pictures. They were more like it. Oh she looks amazing. Unfortunately, I have seen many people critiquing the colour of her hair. First, her hair colour isn’t really important. Think logically through the book. Never does the fact that she has red hair save the day.  However her hair colour will apparently look lighter on the footage so, in the end, it all works out. She is Clary in my eyes. Well she looks the part. Let’s hope she can play the part.

Simon’s Glasses

Lily Collins (Clary) and
Robert Sheehan (Simon)
It wasn’t Simon’s outfit I was most interested in but the glasses. They are one of Simon’s key appearance characteristics. Well … in the first book anyway. He looks great. He is my cute geek. I look at him and I see Simon. And with Robert Sheehan acting, I am fairly hopeful of how Simon is going to turn out in the film. The pictures of Simon and Clary together also show their friendship really well. If I didn’t know this was a movie, I would say they look like great friends. I bet they are in real life too.

What are your thoughts on the costumes? Do you love/hate them? I would love to hear in the comments! :)
