It isn't easy being the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true.
When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.
The prince returns to his castle, intent on making Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is, not the frog he was. But Sunday is not so easy to woo. How can she feel such a strange, strong attraction for this prince she barely knows? And what twisted secrets lie hidden in his past - and hers?

I have found a new genre to explore; Fairy-tale retelling. I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying them. Inside this woman, there is a small girl who wants a young prince to sweep her of her feet.

“You have tortured her with silence. You let her grieve for a soul she did not lose, mourn a heart that should not have been broken, and berate herself betraying the man she loves … with the man she loves.”

Looking back on it, there were things that I shouldn’t have liked; quick romance, a world that doesn’t make a great deal of logical sense e.t.c.  But I have to be honest with you guys, as well as myself, that I just loved this book. I couldn’t stop reading. If it was any other genre, other than fairy-tale, the rushed romance may have annoyed me. However the fairy-tale style allowed this to not be the case.

Enchanted is first and foremost a fairy-tale but Aletha Kontis has improved on the aspects, of fairy-tales, that I don’t like. Lack of depth to the characters is the main one, especially the lead male protagonist. In so many fairy tales, the prince is just some figure that the heroine falls for but we never learn much about them. Not the case here. Oh how I grew to love Rumbold. I originally expected him to a bit of a spoiled brat but we discover his depth quite quickly. We discovered his past and his fears. And slowly I fell for him too.

The writing, as well as the emotional details was what made the book feel more like an adult novel rather than a fairy tale for small children. It had the lightness of a fairy-tale but with the added depth, to the plot, that I expected. I think there was a good balance.

I liked how the Monday’s child poem was incorporated into the story. How it gave each of the daughters a personality. However this seemed natural. Sunday wasn’t bonny and blithe because of the poem. It felt the other way round. (Although it is clear in the book that this was not the case).
At first I thought that it was just going to be a retelling of the Princess and the Frog. Instead there was so many references to so many different classic fairy tales; Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk to name a few. It made me laugh each time.

Another thing to mention is how much I loved the beginning. We were introduced to the characters, a bit of the history and Sunday’s personal background in an entertaining way. It didn’t feel I was being told these because I had to know, it just happened to be mentioned during the events. I managed to read the first two pages before I had to put the book down. That was enough for me to pick it up again.

One downside was that it was a little short. But I don’t think it needs to be too much longer. I just wanted a bit more of it of Rumbold and Sunday’s relationship.

I am surprised that I liked it as much as I did. This is one of those books everyone should give a go. Be prepared to be thrown back into your childhood. I know I was. Just a tad bit longer and it would have been perfect. A fun read for this summer.

Yay! Time for another Teaser on Tuesday. This weeks teaser is from Enchanted by Aletha Kontis. I am enjoying it so far. Definitely want to read more fairy tale re-tellings in the future.

And now back to the textbooks.

If you want to join in it's really easy. All you have to do is:
  • Get the book you are currently reading.
  • Share two teasers sentences. Remember to wary of spoilers; don't want to ruin the book for those who have not read it yet.
  • Also write down the Title and Author of the book. So others can read it too. :)

Can't wait to read every ones teasers! :)

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? #4

Hosted by Book Journey

Well, last week, I was barely on the blog at all as I barley had time for reading never mind anything else. I just have to make it through this week then I have four months off for summer. So can't wait to make up for it then. As I had so little time, I only managed to read one book this week and that was the one that I started last Monday.

On the Blog Last Week

I had time to write one review last week. When you are focusing most of your time and energy on one thing (revision), it can be quite hard to get into the right mindset to write reviews.

What I Have Just Finished

Intangible (Intangible #1) by J.Meyers

Intangible was ok. I didn't like it or hate it. Characters were good, pacing not so good. Unfortunately it got a bit boring in places which didn't help when I'm in the middle of exams. Oh well. Hope to have a review posted. Most likely in the next two weeks.

 Enchanted by Alethea Kontis

I have read a grand total of two pages at the time of writing this post (Sunday. Hopefully I have read a bit more since then), and I loved it. I felt drawn in straight away but then I had to eat dinner, then write this post. You can kind of guess what I will be doing after this. Looking forward to it.

To Read Next
Fever (The Chemical Garden #2) by Lauren DeStefano

I have been meaning to start this for awhile now. I decided to read it at the beginning of the month but a little book called Insurgent (Veronica Roth) was released. I kind of got distracted. But now, I intend to read it next. The first book, Wither, was good but it didn't blow me away however I still want to continue the series to see where it goes.

It's Monday! What are you reading? #3

Hosted by Book Journey

This week has been so up and down, mostly down. I have exams this week, my first is on Wednesday and I feel totally unprepared. Fortunately I got a lot of reading done. After revising most of the day, I didn't want to do anything other than kick back in bed and read. Usually for about three hours before dropping off. :) However, as free time is dedicated to reading, I have not been able to write up many book reviews. I am now up to four on my list. This is not good! I have the notes for them. They just don't make much sense to anyone, other than me, at the moment. So bare with me guys but I will have reviews for:

Black Dawn by Rachel Caine
Cinder by Marissa Meyer
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

hopefully up soon when I get a bit more free time. When ever that may be.

On the Blog Last Week

As I just mentioned, very limited in terms of book reviews. I only had one.

What I Have Just Finished

Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy #1) by Wendy Higgins

I have heard some amazing things about this book so I had high expectation for it. Was this book amazing in my opinion? No. I will explain in more detail in my review but I believe definitely had the potential to be amazing. I loved the plot, the mythology and the characters. I just didn't like the way it was portrayed to me as a reader. 4/5 stars. Review will be up I promise just probably not tomorrow.

Another book that I got this week, as seen in my Stacking the Shelves post. I looking forward to starting this one as I want to explore more fairytale retellings. I really enjoyed Cinder by Marissa Meyer recently; a retelling of Cinderella. Enchanted is a retelling of The Princess and the Frog.

What books are you reading and/or planning to read? I'd love to hear in the comments. It will cheer me up during brakes in revision. :)

Stacking the Shelves #2

Meme Hosted by Tynga's Reviews

I finally took advantage of the 10% discount at the Book Depository. All the books, I ordered, arrived this week except one. However a book I wasn't expecting for a couple more weeks arrived early from Amazon. So yay!! I also got my first book for review which I am really excited to read.

 From Book Depository
  • Enchanted  - Alethea Kontis *Goodreads*
  • The Breakaway - Michelle Davidson Argyle *Goodreads*
  • Dengeki Daisy Vol. 3 - Kyousuke Motomi *Goodreads*
From Amazon
For Review (E-book)
  • Intangible - J. Meyers  (Thank you to the author for the review copy) *Goodreads*

It is a bit annoying that the book that I didn't recieve was Dengeki Daisy Vol.2 which is the book I need before reading Vol.3. Have to wait till next week. Hopefully it will arrive then.

All I have heard is good things about Sweet Evil. I have very high expectations now. Either it will live up to them or not. Hopefully it will.

I am excited to get Enchanted. I featured it in my Waiting on Wednesday last week so looking forward to reading it.

The Breakaway I have heard mixed things about but I like the sound of the story and I am willing to give it a go.

Intangible looks like the type of book that I will enjoy so I looking forward to reading and reviewing it. Thank you again to J.Meyers.

What books did you get this week?
