Book Review: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Title: Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #2)
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publisher: Puffin
Release Date: 7th February 2013
Read In: February 2013

Goodreads - Amazon.co.uk/.com - Book Depository

This is not the fairytale you remember.
But it’s one you won’t forget.
Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. The police have closed her case. The only person Scarlet can turn to is Wolf, a street fighter she does not trust, but they are drawn to each other.
Meanwhile, in New Beijing, Cinder will become the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive – when she breaks out of prison to stay one step ahead of vicious Queen Levana.
As Scarlet and Wolf expose one mystery, they encounter Cinder and a new one unravels. Together they must challenge the evil queen, who will stop at nothing to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner ...
This is a review of the second book in the series and there may be spoilers for Cinder, book one. You can check out my review for Cinder here!

Recently I have felt slightly disappointed with the books I have picked up. I enjoyed them but I didn’t seem to be sucked in. I needed Scarlet. I needed a book which shows me, after a busy month, how much fun kicking back with an amazing book can be. Scarlet is an amazing book.

‘”Are you sure you don’t want the tomatoes? They’re the best part and they were grown in my own garden …”
Some of the intensity drained from the fighter’s face. “I’ve never tried them.”
Scarlet arched an eyebrow, “Never?”
After a hesitant moment, he released his drinking glass and picked up the two slices of tomato … “Not what I expected.”'

I love books that grab you from the first chapter and does not let up. No “everything seems to be calmer now, let’s wait for the next person to end up dead”. Oh no, none of that here; constant action from the start. Answers lead to more questions, new challenges. I was kept on my toes the entire time. I would have read this book in one sitting if it were not for a postponed exam I had to revise for. Blasted weather. There was plot twist after plot twist, minor ones to major ones. There may even been a red herring, or maybe I was looking too much into it. It happens when you are constantly thinking, “What next, what next?”

One of the things I was most worried about when I read the summary for Scarlet, after finishing Cinder, was that all the focus would be on Scarlet’s story and Cinder’s would just be something happening in the background. I was genuinely worried. Thank heavens. It isn’t like that. We get Cinder’s point of view, quiet frequently actually. And it starts off just where Cinder ended. I loved finding how Cinder develops as a person and into her new lunar powers.

Having gotten to know and love Cinder’s character in book one, it was definitely a risky move to introduce a brand new heroine into book two. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to connect with Scarlet because she was not Cinder. Don’t worry. Scarlet is different to Cinder but I easily fell in love with her just as I did with Cinder in the beginning. I wanted to know her story just as much as Cinder’s. There was no point in the book where the chapter switched points of view and I was disappointed; maybe only when there was agonising cliff-hanger.

Reading both Scarlet’s and Cinder’s story together gave Scarlet an added layer of depth that book one didn’t have. I love how the slow development of understanding of how they are connected. This is Marissa Meyer, of course there has to be slow but delicious torture.

Out of all the new characters introduced in Scarlet, the one that most intrigued me was Wolf. Who is he? What is his past? Whose side is he on? Plus, he has the bad boy sex appeal hands down. The book only takes place over a short period of time, a very short period of time. It isn’t very long for Scarlet and Wolf’s relationship to grow. But hell they go through a lot and Scarlet isn’t what I would call a stereotypical love struck teenager. I was intrigued all the way though by both Wolf and his relationship with Scarlet.

While with Cinder I thought it was may have been a bit predictable in places (I still loved it), Scarlet kicks it up another level. I love this book too. I can easily see this becoming a favourite series of mine; if it isn’t already (I need to leave a bit of time first). Bring on Cress.

There are many paranormal/dystopia books that have been released recently and I have already a fair few; The Immortal Rules, Darkness Before Dawn e.t.c. and this doesn't look like anything new to be fair. However I have heard nothing but hype. Everyone is raving about this book. Even though I have seen a couple of not so positive reviews, I still really want to check this book out. I have now heard that it has it has sold its film licensing (or what ever it is called), and it hasn't even been published yet. I know that a movie is probably not going to happen anytime soon but still.

Banned Books I Enjoyed #1

As part of Banned Books week, I will be doing a series of posts promoting books that I enjoyed but were challenged and/or banned. You may recognise them.

Title: The Hunger Games Series
Author: Suzanne Collins
Publisher: Scholastic
Read In: October 2009 - August 2010
Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
If you have not heard of The Hunger Games series you must be living under a rock. This series is everywhere at the moment thanks to the success of the movie adaptation. However not everyone is praising The Hunger Games.

In 2011 a parent at challenged The Hunger Games to the Goffston school board in New Hampshire. She claimed that the book gave her child, who was eleven, nightmares and the book could numb children to the effects of violence.

I agree that this is a violent book but it does not present violence in a good light. The people that are causing the violence are forced to do so by the Capitol, the antagonists of the story.

I do not believe that one parent has the right to ban a book from everyone elses child in the school district. That is the other children's parents decision. This book was not appropriate for this particular child but there may be older children in the school district for which this book is aimed at.

I absolutely loved this book and I cannot highly recommend it enough.

Banned Books Week Giveaway! (INT)

This week is Banned Books Week. This is when we talk about all the books that have been challenged or banned. For YA books this usually happens in schools.

This week I am going to be promoting books that have been challenged or banned that I enjoyed.

Unwind was banned from use in the classroom at Montgermy County High School back in 2010. While it was still available in the library, parents complained about their children studying the book due to foul language, sexual references, child abuse, drug abuse and suicide. I believe that Unwind raises some serious issues that society needs to address. It is based in a dystopic setting however the issues are very real today. I believe that children aged 15+ are old enough learn about these topics.

I am giving away a copy of Unwind by Neal Shusterman and, while the sequel hasn't been banned or challenged as far as I am aware, I am throwing in a copy of the Unwholly, the sequel, as well.

Unwind (Unwind #1) and Unwholly (Unwind #2) by Neal Shusterman

Feature and Follow #15

Weekly Meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.
This is a weekly meme where we answer questions and blog hop to find new blogs to follow. You follow me I will follow you back.

Q: What hyped up book do you think was worth all the talk?
There are so many books that I have read because I have heard a lot of great things about them; Vampire Academy, The Mortal Instruments, The Hunger Games e.t.c. I read all these books around about the same time. I found them by typing in 'Amazing YA books'. This was when I was starting out in the book community. These series' came up repeatedly.

The first time that I read a book, which I absolutely love, because of all of the hype that was surrounding it (everyone was talking about it) was Divergent. If you have not read that series yet, you seriously should. It is amazing!

Divergent (Divergent #1) by Veronica Roth
