Publisher: Puffin
Release Date: 3rd January 2013

Goodreads - Amazon.co.uk/.com - Book Depository
This is not the fairytale you remember.
But it’s one you won’t forget.
Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. The police have closed her case. The only person Scarlet can turn to is Wolf, a street fighter she does not trust, but they are drawn to each other.
Meanwhile, in New Beijing, Cinder will become the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive – when she breaks out of prison to stay one step ahead of vicious Queen Levana.
As Scarlet and Wolf expose one mystery, they encounter Cinder and a new one unravels. Together they must challenge the evil queen, who will stop at nothing to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner . .
If you have not read Cinder yet, you really should. Cinder surpassed all my expectations and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel. Come on January!

Banned Books I Enjoyed #4

As part of Banned Books week, I will be doing a series of posts promoting books that I enjoyed but were challenged and/or banned. You may recognise them.

Title: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Author: Stephen Chbosky
Publisher: Pocket Book
Read In: September 2012

Standing on the fringes of life... offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.
This haunting novel about the dilemma of passivity vs. passion marks the stunning debut of a provocative new voice in contemporary fiction: The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
This is the story of what it's like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie's letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives. We may not know to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course through uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.
Through Charlie, Stephen Chbosky has created a deeply affecting coming-of-age story, a powerful novel that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller coaster days known as growing up.
This book has been banned many times for a large variety of reasons; drug abuse, sexual content, references to masturbation and bestiality. While I believe that this is a great book and teenagers in high school should be able to freely read and discuss the topics, these are common reasons for books to be banned. While I think these themes are exceptable in high schools, younger children may still have an issue.

My main problem that I have with some of the bans is the fact that this book was banned because of homsexuality. While discussing sex at a 10-14 might still be considered a little young however homosexuality... If it is not ok to dicuss topics of homosexuality then it is not ok to discuss topics of hetrosexuality. To me they are on the same level. I don't see homosexuality as something that should be discussed until the child is older. If a child can handle a straight couple why not a gay couple too. Especially at the age of 15-18.

Book Review: Eve and Adam by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate

Title: Eve and Adam (Eve and Adam #1)
Authors: Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate
Publishers: Feiwel & Friends
Release Date: 2nd October 2012
Read In: September 2012

Goodreads - Amazon.co.uk/.com - Book Depository

*I received the book from the publisher in exchange for this review*
Sixteen-year-old Evening Spiker lives an affluent life in San Francisco with her mother, EmmaRose, a successful geneticist and owner of Spiker Biotech. Sure, Evening misses her father who died mysteriously, but she’s never really questioned it. Much like how she’s never stopped to think how off it is that she’s never been sick. That is, until she’s struck by a car and is exposed to extensive injuries. Injuries that seem to be healing faster than physically possible.
While recuperating in Spiker Biotech’s lush facilities, she meets Solo Plissken, a very attractive, if off-putting boy her age who spent his life at Spiker Biotech. Like Evening, he’s never questioned anything... until now. Solo drops hints to Evening that something isn’t right, and Emma-Rose may be behind it. Evening puts this out of her mind and begins her summer internship project: To simulate the creation of the perfect boy. With the help of Solo, Evening uncovers secrets so big they could change the world completely.

What would you do if you could, literally, design the ‘perfect’ guy; from his looks to his personality, everything? This alone drew me to this book. It is different, it is original. I had to see what is was all about.

‘”This will be a wonderful introduction to the kind of thinking and creativity we require at Spiker,” my mother says. “It’ll challenge you, sweetheart. Bring out the talent I know you have hidden deep, deep down inside you.” She’s getting excited now. The lines in her forehead seem to smooth; her eyes gaze with a certain wild excitement at the horizon. She pauses, waiting to be sure she has my undivided attention. “I want you, Evening, to design the perfect boy.”’

This book gives a different perspective to the ‘perfect guy’. How many people get to simulate the perfect guy into the level of depth as genetics? But maybe there is no such thing. There will always be a fault into the guy you end up spending the rest of your life with. It is dealing with that fault that is the interesting parts of any relationship. A man without fault, the perfect guy, may not be so interesting. So what is perfect? When Eve is designing Adam, it really gets you thinking about all the different aspects that make us human; from our physical traits to all the nitty gritty details of our personalities.

I am a nerd. I know I am a nerd. I can happily admit I am one. Two interests in my life are science, specifically biology, and latest technology (although not at as much detail). Eve and Adam sort of tickled my fancy in each. Eve is playing around with genetics but you really do not need to know much about the topic to understand this book. Genes code for our individual traits. That’s all you really need to know. I am guessing this is set in the near future. Technology is used a lot more in this book than most YA novels I have read. Many characters in YA still seem to use phones for just calls and texts which are fair enough. Here we have characters using apps. iPads are commonly used. Electric cars are also getting the go ahead. It did give a slight sci-fi edge to it but still thoroughly believable. I enjoyed this side of the world. iPads as medical charts? It could happen.

Eve is at the point in her life where she is discovering who she is. Not just all the sci-fi elements but the normal human side as well. She thinks a lot about what someone like her should be doing or what she should like. This was evident when she was designing Adam. I like the confliction she had with what she wanted and what she thinks other people would want. She grows and I liked following her.

I was very curious about Solo from the start. He is adorable. He is really smart. He has things planned out. He knows how to handle situations. However he is shy. When he meets Aislin he is uncomfortable. He doesn’t know how to act around Eve. I loved that. I want more Solo.

My main niggle that I have with this book is I felt it was a little short. I had a fear at one point that there wasn’t going to be a sequel. This book needs a sequel. It ends too quickly to be a one off.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I liked the setting that the characters find themselves in and how technology is incorporated into their lives. I am looking forward to next book Adam & Eve.

Banned Books I Enjoyed #3

As part of Banned Books week, I will be doing a series of posts promoting books that I enjoyed but were challenged and/or banned. You may recognise them.

 Title: Vampire Academy Series
Author: Richelle Mead
Publisher: Razorbill
Read In: August 2009 - December 2010

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
I owe a lot to this series. I read the first three Vampire Academy books back in August 2009 and afterwards wanted to talk about them. None of my friends had ever heard of them so I went online, and discovered Goodreads. From then on my book obsession sort of exploded. And it all started with one little book called Vampire Academy.

Unfortunately not everyone shares my enthusiasm for, what I believe to be, an amazing series. This book was banned Henderson Junior High School in Stephenville, Texas. The whole series was banned for sexual content and nudity. The reason for the ban I am in acceptance off. Some of the themes running through this book are not the best for Junior High students. However the whole series was banned. The WHOLE series. This included all the books that had not even been published yet. Not all of the books have sexual content in them. Sexual references yes, but not content. What I find annoying is the fact that this assumption was made. Yes all the books, ultimately, have some form of sexual reference but this was not known until the books had been published. Rose could have become a nun for all we knew before all the books were published. Richelle Mead never fails to surprise me.

What are your thoughts?

Monthly Wrap Up (September 2012)

At the end of each month I write a post containing all the books that I have read in that month. The Gem of the Month is the best book that I read. If, for whatever reason, I read a book but did not post a review, you can find them posted here along with my rating.

I can't believe the summer is over. It was long and yet it flew by. I am currently back at Uni, without the Internet at home. That is really annoying. I am having to do all of my blogging from the comfort of the university library. If I can get a computer. I don't like lugging my laptop here but iPads do not like Blogger.

Anyway enough moping. Onto what books that I read in the lovely month of September.
